Are you groundswelling ?

Thanks to Fred Cavazza, I discovered a book, you have certainly heard about “groundswell” (by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff from Forrester Research). They have captured the social “change”, that I was searching around without putting my finger on. They called it “groundsweel” :

“A social trend in which people use technologies to get things they need from each other, rather than from traditional institutions like corporations”

I can now understand what makes genY so different ! It is the generation that is numerous enough to weight against institution, they possess the technology as well as the institutions, the are people aware, they know there is always someone they can rely on.

Gen Y has the power to handle a revolution. Will it be done?

  • You should swing by BrazenCareerist sometime. It’s Gen Y professional and personal development site, and though the emphasis is on career, a lot of conversations about leadership and culture do come up.

In the name of full disclosure: it’s where my blog gets syndicated.

  • Thanks Zak, I’ll swing by there as soon as possible

If you are talking about the procurement of goods and services, traditional institutions like departmental stores and banks are still top dog. The only thing is, these traditional institutions themselves are harnessing technologies to provide their goods and services efficiently and effectively.

Maybe you mean Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM) schemes like Amway and Quixtar. But from what I see, these haven’t really caught on.

  • @Vasanth : I rather mean service institution like schools, media, churchs, etc. But, as to procurement of goods, I think websites like e-bay able a one-to-one transaction with far less betweens than there used to be…
