When robots try to bite Apple ! (they get poisonned)
Each month since at least a year, we can read some posts about Android (should I really introduce the google software for smartphones?). This week, every tech blog gossips about the first handset to run Android has been approved by the FCC.
In all that noise low analytical about this google new launches I read one very interesting post from LXer that analyses “why google sounds more like Microsoft Everyday”. It is focused on how their launch strategies are close. I deeply agree on that point but I would like to build under their title.
As a marketing manager and former ad guy, I notice that Microsoft and Google have not only the same strategy but also the competitor : “Apple”. I am not an Apple evangelist or fan, but I recognise I admire the incredible strength of Apple brand positionning through time, competitors and markets :
- 1984, Apple vs IBM, micro-computer
- 1997, Apple vs Microsoft, operating systems
- 2008, Apple vs Google, smartphone operating system
Apple, has not been the leader on all that period or that product. But they are still there and seems so young and vital!
The secret of that vitality is that since 1984, Apple stands on the same positionning : “Human creativity must not be restrained by any machine”. That leads apple teams to develop highly human oriented products and always pushes their ennemies on robots side knowing perfectly that no one could deeply love a robot (Event wall-e). So Apple appears to be the only resistant against robot in the fight to rule the world.
Funny part : Does Apple produce anything else than robots ?

I like your point and it could explain partially Apple’s continuous innovation. However, it is worth noticing that, from a sales view point, Apple lost against IBM on PC and also against Microsoft on OS. On the other hand, IBM PC division is dead (bought by Lenovo). Microsoft is really struggling to go beyond OS. And Google’s innovation is slowing down drastically.
So Apple is indeed still here innovating 25 years down the round but will it be able to win against Google? We shall see…

Indeed, Apple has often lost the standard battle since their products are dedicated to an elite.
But somehow they lead the standard creation since others are usually imitators of Apple’s innovation.
Strange case!
But my point was really on their communication and nothing more, they are many things to say on Apple.

Dude, spell check… this is why blogs are not taken seriously, half of them use run on grammar and terrible spelling…
Also, Apple may have been in the running in each of those categories, however, they were not able to compete and thus fell out of the market eventually or they cater strictly to a niche and thus limit their exposure / market share (which is true about everything they’ve ever done, other than the iPod, although the Zune is quickly catching up).
I am the proud owner of an Android phone (Samsung Moment with Sprint 4G) and I must say, compared to my buddy’s iPhone, this thing has far surpassed it, and it is only version 1.5! I can’t wait until I get Android 2.1 on my phone.
