Home! We all remember the dying E.T voice saying home, I want to phone home… Have you never had this same feeling when you had got lost on the web? That is my point today : what is a home on the Internet? Do we still need a home pages today ?

Let’s spend some times on the so-called home feeling? First, a home is not an house… a home has something to do with your wellbeing, it is the place where you feel quite, where everything is under control, where everyone is caring, where everything is organised to fullfill your need. Unfortunatly, it takes time to settle a home, to build a home. Not really the objectives part of the concept but rahter the relationship network that goes around. E.T is probably well on earth but he misses his environment, his relatives, his landscapes, etc. It is interesting to see that the more time you spend outside, the farther you og the more you have home and not a house.

It is interesting to see that is not that different on the web except that we are now talking about the world (wide web) and home-pages. But we like to surf on the web or on a site and we all like to get back to one’s self safe place. However, the link between the idea of home in the real life and the role home pages on the Internet has gone closer and strenghten through the years.

• Ten years ago, the home page was the first page to be seen. Usually, websites were portals and the first page was called “home”.
• 5 years ago appeared the idea of personnalisation of the services. Websites likes amazons were very good at showing you what people like were about to read, listen to, etc.
• The social revolution broughts us the idea of building a profile, that could help to build a global participative portal that was called home
• Now, we enter in the subjective area the world is going to different for everyone of us. Our world is the world in which we will live.

Indeed the concepts of home and home pages are closer because the web has incorporated social relation to the first html objects and strenghten because people are managing their life more and more through the Internet. So home-page is still a valid concept and its importance is even bigger than it was.

It is the key factor as to competition on the web today. The web is getting wider and wider. Users needs are increasing a lot but they get lost and confused with such a profusion. So what do they need? A home!, I mean a real home.

A Home ! A home that would select with them and for them the best of the Internet… that was what google was good at once but they are overwhelmed now, that is what facebook is good at for social relations, what is youtube good at as to videos.

But we need something more global, at the scale our our need and of the Internet. Who will be the next that will give me a good home, I mean a home that give me a good, a real access to my world?
